When will Twins’ Byron Buxton, Royce Lewis return from injuries?

The Minnesota Twins are in third place in the American League Central with a 24-17 record as of this story’s writing. They are currently two games behind the first place Cleveland Guardians. Minnesota has performed fairly well despite Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis both missing time with injuries.

Lewis and Buxton both feature All-Star potential when healthy. The problem is that both players have dealt with no shortage of injury concerns in their careers so far.

Lewis was placed on the injured list early in the season with a severe right quad strain. Buxton, meanwhile, is dealing with right knee inflammation.

According to MLB.com, Lewis is expected to return “no sooner than June.” Lewis has started hitting on the field. The next step will be running the bases.

Buxton is reportedly expected to return soon. He is beginning his rehab assignment on Wednesday.

“Pretty much [the last step is] just work out with the team,” Buxton said, via MLB.com. “[The team] was on the road the last few days and then off yesterday. Just not being able to get out there with them and do everything, so to get out there and do everything is probably the last step.”

Barring a setback, we could see Buxton back on the field with the Twins within the next week.

Buxton is close to returning. Meanwhile, Lewis is still a few weeks away. Still, both injury updates are positive. The Twins are hoping to get fully healthy as soon as possible.

The American League Central was one of the worst divisions in MLB during the 2023 season. In 2024, though, the division has been quite competitive.

The Cleveland Guardians currently lead the division with a 27-16 record. The Kansas City Royals are surprisingly sitting in second place following multiple forgettable seasons. Minnesota is third as mentioned earlier, while the Detroit Tigers are in fourth with a 21-21 record. The only team in the division with a record below .500 is the Chicago White Sox right now.

The standings are quite different from 2023. Last season, only the Twins had a better record than .500. It goes without saying, but the division features a lot of young and exciting players. Those players are beginning to take steps forward which has resulted in a much better brand of baseball in the division.

The Twins likely feel content with their current standings placement. Two of their best offensive presences are injured and the team is only two games out of first place. Minnesota should have an opportunity to win the division in 2024.

However, Cleveland and Kansas City are both playing with confidence. This division will be thrilling to follow as the ’24 campaign continues.

We will continue to monitor and provide updates on Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis’ injury statuses as they are made available.
